ABOUT PALM JUMEIRAH
Dubai is famous for its soaring skyline – and that’s not the only feat of engineering to capture the world’s imagination. Palm Jumeirah is the largest manmade island on the planet. Built from reclaimed land in a series of artificial archipelagos, Palm Jumeirah is shaped like a palm tree when viewed from above. The unique island is home to some of Dubai’s top luxury resorts, including Atlantis, The Palm, FIVE Palm Jumeirah Hotel, Jumeirah Zabeel Saray, One & Only the Palm and many more.
In terms of size, the island covers 560 hectares, which is big enough to house 600 football pitches. There are fantastic fine dining options, such as Nobu and 101 Dining Lounge, and more than 80 restaurants, lounges and other attractions at The Pointe, located along a scenic promenade at the tip of The Palm.
Dubai’s Palm Jumeirah is an artificial island shaped like a palm tree. There are 16 branches extending from the trunk of the palm tree, and a crescent-shaped breakwater with a total length of 11 kilometers has been set up to surround them. The site is 5 kilometers square, and is said to have an area equivalent to more than 800 regular soccer fields.
Palm Jumeirah, home to more than 18 hotels and resorts, a waterpark and its own dedicated public transport network, the monorail, added another string to its bow this year despite being in the midst of a health pandemic.
How was Palm Jumeirah created?
Palm Jumeirah was built by Nakheel, a major Dubai government developer. As you can see from the fact that it is an artificial island, it is basically made of reclaimed land.
9,400 million cubic meters of sand and 700 million tons of rock were used to reclaim the island, dumping the earth into the ocean floor at a depth of 10.5 meters and piling it up to a height of 3 meters above sea level.
The breakwater is made of natural rock and is designed to allow marine life to live around it over time. Two F-100 fighter jets were also sunk in the sea near Palm Jumeirah to create an artificial reef, which also serves as a diving spot.
